In 2003 I discovered a breed of dog that stole my heart.
I had not long had a relationship breakdown and was in search for a new everyday companion after losing my wonderful German shepherd Trubble.
I looked and looked and looked, and then I discovered white shepherds. Surfing the net at work one night, while waiting for the next page to sub edit, I came across white shepherds.
I fell in love with these white and golden dogs. Then began the search for a puppy. For a couple of weeks I talked to a breeder and he offered to meet me halfway at a park I knew of close to my then home in Victoria.
Out of the car tumbled mum, dad and four gorgeous white shepherd puppies. They went in all directions. I just stood there transfixed.
One little white shepherd puppy stopped in his tracks, plonked his backside down and looked me up and down. Then got up and bowled on over, sat on my foot and looked up.
Bending over I scooped him into my arms, and in he snuggled with his little head buried down the front of my jumper.
That was it. We bonded in that instant. All the heartache I'd been going through melted away.
This was the beginning of life with Merlin and my obsession with white shepherds.

Australian white shepherds have many names — white swiss shepherd, white german shepherd, berger blanc suisse — but all are from the same genetic makeup unless they are imported.
